Kicking off the series was Dr. Tom Quinn, an optometrist from Ohio who is a true expert in soft multifocal contact lenses. Dr. Quinn is a Diplomate of the Contact Lens, Cornea and Refractive Surgery Section of the American Academy of Optometry.
Some of the key takeaways:
In many studies, up to 75% of patients prefer multifocal contact lenses over monovision
Fit presbyopes early
Use realistic verbiage with patients such as "My goal is to meet MOST of your goals, MOST of the time"
Do not use visual acuity as a barometer for success. If the patient is happy with their vision, finalize their Rx!
The blue tolerance test is an excellent way to assess sensory dominance (to find out which eye is more sensitive to blue). Dr. Quinn gives us an exact step-by-step approach
If patients suffer from dry eye, treat that first. The eye has to have a good environment in order to be successful with contact lenses
