L.I.D - Listen, Identify and Diagnose

with Dr. Janelle Davison

This course was designed to equip optometrists with the necessary information for accurate diagnosis, effective treatment, and proper management of Demodex blepharitis. It covered the long-term impact of Demodex when left untreated, how to easily diagnose the condition, and how to approach the conversation with patients. One helpful tip that was shared: frame the discussion using a dental analogy. Just as plaque buildup can lead to cavities, allowing Demodex to accumulate can result in complications with contact lens wear, vision disturbances, and other ocular surface issues.

Dr. Janelle Davison first discussed the importance of being active listeners and empathetic providers, and how that can greatly impact the clinical outcomes for our Demodex blepharitis patients.

She discussed the disease state of Demodex blepharitis, as well as the best diagnostic methods. She also shared the prevalence and impact on patients’ quality of life, and included many case studies. We learned about recently approved prescription topical medication for the treatment of Demodex blepharitis, how to introduce this in our practice, and clinical pearls in patient communication.

She finished up by discussing how we can integrate this treatment into our primary care, ocular aesthetics and dry eye clinics as well.
