What is the CLOSE Initiative?

Interview with Dr. Mile Brujic

In a few sentences, what is CLOSE?

CLOSE (Collaborative Learning in Ocular Surface Education) is an educational program designed to enhance the knowledge and skills of eye care professionals in diagnosing and managing ocular surface diseases, particularly dry eye. Through a structured curriculum, expert-led discussions, and implementation into clinical practice, CLOSE provides clinicians with the latest advancements in diagnostic tools and treatment strategies. The program aims to transform clinical practice by improving patient outcomes and fostering collaboration among professionals in the field.

Where did the name come from?

The name CLOSE stands for Collaborative Learning in Ocular Surface Education. It was chosen to reflect the program’s mission of fostering collaboration among eye care professionals while providing cutting-edge education on ocular surface diseases. The name emphasizes the close-knit learning environment and the goal of improving patient care through shared expertise.

How long have you and Dr. Kading been working on this initiative?

We have been working on CLOSE (Collaborative Learning in Ocular Surface Education) for the past 15 yearsWe started the initiative with a student program referred to as SWOS (student workshop of the ocular surface) continuously evolving the program to meet the growing needs of the students. CLOSE developed through the evolution of this program. Our dedication to innovation and collaboration has shaped CLOSE into a transformative program that enhances clinical practice and improves patient outcomes.

How is this program different from some of the dry eye lectures and workshops that are offered through other organizations?

CLOSE is unique compared to other dry eye lectures and workshops because it is a comprehensive, collaborative, and continuously evolving educational program. Unlike traditional workshops that provide one-time instruction, CLOSE fosters an ongoing learning community where clinicians can engage in interactive discussions and habit changing patterns in dry eye care of the latest diagnostic and treatment strategies.

CLOSE emphasizes practical implementation in clinical practice, ensuring that participants can immediately apply what they learn to enhance patient care. CLOSE is designed to transform the way eye care professionals approach dry eye management in a dynamic and engaging way.

What type of practitioner would benefit from the CLOSE program?

The CLOSE (Collaborative Learning in Ocular Surface Education) program is designed for a wide range of eye care professionals who are passionate about advancing their knowledge and skills in diagnosing and managing ocular surface disease.  By participating in CLOSE, practitioners at all levels can enhance patient outcomes, stay ahead of emerging trends, and transform the way they manage dry eye disease and ocular surface conditions.

What can practitioners expect who enroll in this program?

Practitioners who enroll in the CLOSE (Collaborative Learning in Ocular Surface Education) program can expect a comprehensive and collaborative learning experience that will transform how they diagnose and manage ocular surface disease.

What to Expect:

  • Cutting-Edge Education – Gain in-depth knowledge of the latest diagnostic technologies, treatment protocols, and clinical research in dry eye and ocular surface disease.

  • Interactive LearningParticipate in case-based discussions and expert-led sessions that go beyond traditional lectures.

  • Practical Application – Learn how to implement new diagnostic tools and treatment strategies immediately into clinical practice to enhance patient outcomes.

  • Ongoing Support & Resources – Access a library of educational materials, diagnostic guides, and clinical tools to support continuous learning and practice growth.

By the end of the program, practitioners will have the confidence and expertise to elevate their dry eye practice, improve patient care, and stay at the forefront of ocular surface disease management.

How many practitioners do you anticipate participating in this program?

We anticipate a strong and growing community of practitioners participating in the CLOSE (Collaborative Learning in Ocular Surface Education) program.  We expect one thousand clinicians as awareness of the program grows.

Given the increasing prevalence of ocular surface disease and the demand for advanced education in dry eye management, we believe CLOSE will attract a diverse group of optometrists eager to enhance their skills and improve patient outcomes. The program’s interactive format and practical application will continue to drive engagement and participation from eye care professionals across the country.

How are you able to offer the CLOSE
program for free?

The CLOSE program is offered at no cost thanks to the support of industry partners, sponsors, and a shared commitment to advancing ocular surface education. By collaborating with organizations that recognize the importance of improving dry eye diagnosis and management, we can provide high-quality educational resources without financial barriers for practitioners. Additionally, the program is designed to foster a community of learning, where shared knowledge and expertise help elevate the entire profession. This model ensures that more clinicians have access to cutting-edge education, ultimately leading to better patient care.

What would you define as success of the CLOSE program at the end of 2025?

Success of the CLOSE program at the end of 2025 for clinicians will be defined by their ability to confidently integrate advanced diagnostic techniques and treatment strategies into their practice, leading to improved patient outcomes in ocular surface disease. Clinicians should feel more knowledgeable, skilled, and prepared to manage dry eye and related conditions using evidence-based and clinically applicable approaches. Additionally, success means that participants remain engaged in the CLOSE community, collaborating with peers, sharing best practices, and continuously learning.

Are you already brainstorming for CLOSE 2026? Can practitioners expect a similar program or will it be different?

Yes, we are already brainstorming for CLOSE 2026, focusing on how to enhance the program and continue providing cutting-edge education in ocular surface disease. While the core principles of collaboration, hands-on learning, and real-world application will remain, practitioners can expect new content, evolving diagnostic and treatment strategies, and a more interactive learning experience based on participant feedback. The program will likely incorporate emerging research, advanced technologies, and potentially new formats such as case-based simulations, digital tools, or expanded clinical workshops. CLOSE will continue to evolve to meet the needs of eye care professionals, ensuring it remains a leading educational resource in ocular surface disease management.
