Learn more about Scleral Lens Fundamentals with Dr. Melanie Frogozo

It’s time for Woo’s Wisdom! Dr. Melanie Frogozo taught us all things scleral lenses in her talk titled “Scleral Lens Fundamentals”.

Here are some summary points:

· Indications for scleral lenses can extend past irregular corneas and be prescribed for ocular surface disease or high refractive errors

· It is important to carefully evaluate each zone of the lens, including the haptic alignment, central vault, and limbal clearance.

· Always remember to remove the lens and check for complications with NaFl stain.

· It is important to be familiar with ocular surface disease, as often, management of dry eye and scleral lenses go together.

· If a patient’s lens is fogging, determine if it’s coming from the front surface or beneath the lens.

· If fogging occurs beneath the lens, it’s usually secondary to underlying ocular surface disease. Address fog by treating the patient’s dry eye, decreasing the vault size, and/or recommend instilling a viscous artificial tear into the lens before insertion.

· If the fogging is on the outside of the lens, this is also typically due to ocular surface disease. After treating for dry eye, other ways to address this issue are adding HydraPEG and “Boosting” the lens on a regular basis.

Dr. Frogozo had so many more expert tips to share. Her presentation is now available at WooU.org under past events. Hope everyone is having a great day!
