Learn more about Glaucoma and Retina with Dr. Joe Pizzimenti!

It’s time for Woo’s Wisdom!

In our recent webinar titled “When Glaucoma and Retina Converge" by Dr. Joseph Pizzimenti, we learned how various retinal and systemic conditions can increase the risk of developing glaucoma or result in glaucoma development . We also learned how to evaluate glaucoma testing with retinal conditions in mind.

Here are some of the key takeaway points:

  • Retinal diseases that cause cell damage and could lead to glaucoma are diabetes (especially PDR), RVO, RAO, malignancies and sickle cell retinopathy

  • Retinal diseases that are associated with higher risks of glaucoma development are high myopia, retinal detachments, and retinitis pigmentosa.

  • Certain retinal procedures, such as PRP, anti-VEGF, injected steroids, and vitrectomies, can increase the risk of glaucoma due to potential increase in IOP

  • Systemic diseases, such as hypotension, hypertension, migraines, Reynod's, obstructive sleep apnea, and peripheral vascular disease, can increase the risk of glaucoma.
