Learn more about Lid and Lash Hygiene with Dr. Selina McGee

It’s time for some Woo’s Wisdom! Dr. Selina McGee presented on all things lid and lash hygiene in her presentation titled, “Show Your Lids and Lashes Some Love”. Let’s discuss some key takeaways:

👁️Many of our patients may be wearing false lashes, have permanent make-up, or wearing make up that may negatively impact the ocular surface. Dr. McGee reviewed how to handle these types of conversations and suggested healthier alternatives.

👁️For example, eyelash extensions can lead to a build up of oil, debris, bacteria, and demodex. Patients may avoid cleaning them, fearing that they may break down the adhesive or cause the lashes to fall out. Dr. McGee recommends patients to use hypochlorous acid twice daily with a clean lash brush.

👁️Always remember to ask the patient to LOOK DOWN. It’s easy to miss things like demodex or blepharitis in primary gaze.

👁️Collarettes are a pathognomonic sign of demodex blepharitis. If you see them, patients WILL have demodex.

👁️Dr. McGee reviewed the new topical medication, Xdemvy, that actually kills demodex. Studies show great efficacy and safety profile! Be sure to code properly for demodex to be able to notify these patients once the drug becomes available in your practice!

Dr. McGee’s presentation was full of clinical pearls to help address prevalent issues we see every day related to lid hygiene and health. Check out her presentation & handouts on WooU.org/past-events.
