Learn more about Contact Lenses for Myopia Management with Dr. Julie DeKinder
It’s time for some Woo’s Wisdom! Dr. Julie DeKinder presented on Contact Lens Fitting for Myopia Management. Let’s review some of the key takeaways from this in-depth review on contact lenses for myopia management:
· Multiple studies show us that kids can wear contact lenses safely, are mature enough to independently care for their lenses, and that chair time may only be 15 minutes longer compared to an adult.
What about before a child becomes myopic? The best predictor for myopia onset is the cycloplegic spherical equivalent refractive error at a given age. For example, if a child is more myopic than +0.75 at the age of 6, it is very likely they will become myopic
Orthokeratology can be a great option for patients with a refractive error between -1.25 and -4.00. Any less myopia than -1.25 diopter will not induce enough mid-peripheral plus to provide sufficient myopic defocus to the peripheral retina.
If a child is unable to wear the FDA-approved MiSight lenses, Dr. DeKinder reviewed how to prescribe alternative multifocal designs and rules to remember. Some important rules to keep in mind are to use a center distance design and prescribe the highest add that the child will tolerate.
Dr. DeKinder’s presentation was packed with amazing science and clinical pearls that will elevate the care that we provide to our myopic children. Check out her presentation & handouts on WooU.org/past-events.
