Woo’s Wisdom for Dr Kimberly Friedman’s webinar, The Foundations of Dry Eye Management. 

This was a fantastic overview of dry eye disease, and how to make decisions on how to treat our patients based on science and research.  She discussed that DED is one of the most common reasons patients visit eye care practitioners, and that OD’s in any setting can be managing these patients.

Her best advice? Start with evidence based medicine and treatment algorithms supported by respected medical research- including TFOS DEWS II.  This includes: educating patients about dry eye, identifying environmental factors, systemic and medication factors that may make DED worse, and discussing dietary modification and supplementation.  This included an in depth discussion about what Omega’s can do in the eye and the body.  Also- don’t forget the importance of lid hygiene and warm compresses!
