Learn from Dr. Jennifer Stewart - Woo’s Wisdom for Dr. Elise Kramer’s presentation, Surprising Eyelid Issues That Lead to Contact Lens Discomfort.
She started by discussing that the causes of CL dropout are frequently underestimated and misunderstood. Little is actively done by the average practitioner, and the economic impact on a practice is hard to measure and underestimated. It is that thought that a practice can lose as much as $24000 over the lifetime of a single patient who drops out of CL wear.
What is the #1 reason for dropout? Comfort and fit. What are some of the causes for discomfort?
MGD, Blepharitis, dry eye, allergies, dermatological conditions, and contact lens fit.
She described the signs and symptoms of these patient complaints, and shared current findings and studies. She also shared best practices in patient education and new treatments in demodex.
What is her top tip? Better management of ocular surface would reduce contact lens discomfort and improve retention in contact lens wear.
