Learn from Dr. Cerenzie’s Woo U Wisdom on “Perimetry Primer: Fundamentals of Visual Fields” by Dr. Ibach
It’s time for some Woo’s Wisdom! In Dr. Mitch Ibach’s presentation, titled “Perimetry Primer: Fundamentals of Visual Fields”, Dr. Ibach discussed all things visual fields, from screening to suprathreshold visual fields. Here are a few highlights:
📍 Ways to differentiate visual field defects from neurologic disease, retinal disease, and glaucoma were discussed. For example, defects secondary to neurologic disease tend to respect the vertical meridian of a visual field. The more posterior the damage secondary to neurologic disease, the more congruent the defects are. Conversely, glaucoma tends to respect the horizontal meridian. Lastly, retinal visual field loss more commonly affects the central visual field, as 60-70% of optic nerve fibers compose the macular region.
📍 Breaking down threshold visual fields for glaucoma – A 30-2 tests 76 points with 6 degrees of spacing, a 24-2 tests 54 points with 6 degrees spacing, and the 10-2 tests 68 test points with 2 degrees spacing.
📍 Dr. Ibach prefers the SITA Faster as reliability tends to be better with faster tests. The SITA faster is 30.4% shorter than the SITA fast and 53.5 % shorter than SITA Standard.
📍 Dr. Ibach spent some time walking attendees through how to thoroughly assess a visual field, types of visual defects, understanding the stages of glaucoma based on these findings, and how to assess for progression of glaucoma.
This lecture addressed the questions of why we use visual fields, when to perform them, what types of visual fields are available, and how to best interpret these findings. Be sure to go to WooU.org and check out the recording and handouts!
