Learn about Disorders of the Eyelid with Dr. Eissa Hanna
Dr. Eissa Hanna presentation, titled “Disorders of the Eyelid”, began with a review on eyelid and basic orbital anatomy as a basis to better understand the underlying pathology of various eyelid pathology.
For example, meibomian glands continuously produce secretory products. If at any point the lumen becomes clogged, the secretory products can release within the eyelid tissue, the immune system recognizes this as foreign, and a hordeolum or preseptal cellulitis could potentially develop.
As an expert in Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS), he reviewed the etiology, treatment, and management of SJS. SJS is a rare, but very serious, disorder of the skin and mucous membranes. Because of the exudative necrosis of the mucosa, the patient often presents as a burn victim. Patients suffering from SJS often are left with severe dry eye, blepharitis, and ocular pain. He stated that all of his patients, with the exception of one, were placed in scleral lenses to help protect the ocular surface and provide lubrication to the eye.
Blepharitis was also reviewed in depth. Blepharitis histologically presents as chronic inflammation that destroys local tissue and can damage meibomian glands. It can also cause sterile ulcers.
He then reviewed both benign and malignant lesions that occur on the eyelids and adnexa, as well as how to identify and differentiate between these types of lesions.
Dr. Hanna reviewed many interesting cases that ranged from compartment syndrome to very severe trauma with incredible outcomes. If you were unable to attend, please check out his handouts and recorded webinar under “past events”.
