Neurotrophic keratitis is a degenerative ocular condition caused by impairment of the corneal nerves and characterized by loss of corneal sensitivity. Dry eye syndrome and neurotrophic keratitis often present similarly, thus many patients are misdiagnosed in the early stages. Corneal nerves play an important role in maintaining the health of the front surface of the eye, so it is critical that these patients are diagnosed and treated early. In this event, we will review neurotrophic keratitis awareness and clinical presentation. We will discuss common differential diagnoses and corneal sensitivity testing. Lastly, we will review FDA-approved treatment options.
