Learn more about Myopia Management with Dr. Nick Despotidis
It’s time for some Woo’s Wisdom!
You have no doubt heard of Dr. Nick Despotidis if you have delved into resources, presentations, and publications on myopia management. Dr. Despotidis is one of the leading experts in creating a thriving myopia management specialty practice. He shared some of his experiences with us in his recent presentation, titled Myopia Management Marketing 101.
Here are some of the main takeaways:
- The parent that is interested in controlling their child’s myopia with orthokeratology is different that an average primary care patient
o Dr. Despositis discussed that he could talk to 40 families about myopia management while in primary care and 1 could translate into a fit.
o For others, it could take 5 years before commitment
Families that are interested in myopia control tend to have specific characteristics, which may include:
· “Helicopter parents”
· Highly educated parents
· Guilty parents
· Competitive parents
· Parents who view myopia as disease
The best marketing strategy there is for myopia management is to create raving fans
· This means that a parent is so happy with the care you provided that they refer friends and family. Those referrals are then educated on expectations before they come into the office, which he calls an educated referral.
· This is very different from other forms of marketing, as you and your team would have to provide most of the education and explanation of pricing structures.
Create raving fans by:
· Not only providing patients needs (ie great vision), but also their wants – relieving them of guilt, discussing screen time and sleep with their child, providing incessant communication, and placing urgency on attending to after-hour questions/needs.
He also provided some genius tricks of the trade to help patients succeed in application and removal, one of the struggles we may all have with kiddos trying contact lenses for the first time.
