Learn more about Lifestyle Risks Associated with Dry Eye with Dr. Tracy Doll

In Dr. Doll’s presentation titled, “Four Hidden Lifestyle Risks Associated with Dry Eye”, she discussed risk factors that make a huge impact on dry eye disease that we should be discussing with our patients. Here is a quick summary:

·        The cosmetic and beauty industry is unregulated. This is a major concern as many ingredients in beauty products can exacerbate or cause dry eye. Harmful ingredients in these products can include preservatives, pigments, and emollients.

·        Dr. Doll discussed the effects of lash serums, lash enhancements, and make up removers on the eyes, and expanded on healthier alternatives to recommend to patients.

·        Another significant risk factor is vaping or e-cigarette use which can alter the tear film with harmful ingredients such as formaldehyde contained within the vapor.

·        The third risk factor is screen-time. She reviewed the current knowledge on blue-light exposure, as well as data on decreased blink rates.

·        The final sneaky risk factor was sleep disorders, or general lack of sleep. Causes of dry eye may include floppy eyelid syndrome and exposure to leaking oxygen from a CPAP. Dr. Doll discussed the importance of lid testing with the Korb and Blackie lid seal test and the snap-back test.
